Northern Canada Awards - Scholarship

There is a shortage of veterinarians in Canada. In the north, there are currently three veterinary clinics in Yellowknife, covering all of the Northwest Territories, and no veterinary clinics in Nunavut. To build accessible access to animal health, supporting northern residents in pursuing veterinary college and removing barriers is a step towards a better future.

One $10,000 scholarship is available annually.

Eligibility requirements

  • Applicant must be accepted and enrolled full-time in veterinary school in Canada.
  • Applicant is a resident of the NWT, Yukon or Nunavut and have resided in the territory for at least the last two years
  • Applicant has demonstrated interest in one health and/or growing access to care in remote communities. Community involvement desirable.
  • Applicant intends to work in the territories upon completion of their studies.
  • The successful recipient agrees to support VWB through: a speaking engagement and/or presentation at summit, one annual activity in the north during studies, and speaking with communications officer at VWB to highlight their commitment within the year of the scholarship.

Priority will be given to Indigenous applicants.

Continued support

This award is renewable as long as the academic requirements continue to be met.

Veterinarians Without Borders commits to connecting the recipient with northern/Indigenous veterinary mentors and the opportunity to spent their veterinary rotation in 3rd / 4th year at a Veterinarians Without Borders Northern Animal Health Initiative clinic.

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by an ad-hoc team of VWB staff and Northern Canada committee members.
