Northern Animal Health Initiative
In recent years VWB/VSF has substantially increased its role in improving animal health in the Canadian North. It is offering temporary veterinary clinics in a growing number of under-served communities in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic that prevented veterinarians from Southern Canada from volunteering their time in the north. VWB/VSF is fortunate to be able to access the services of excellent veterinarians and vet techs who are based in the north.
In addition to community veterinary services, VWB/VSF is maintaining a data base of the organizations providing veterinary services in the north with the intent of improving coordination. It has hosted several in-person meetings of stakeholders, including partner communities, and held a very successful on-line summit when face to face meetings were not possible. VWB/VSF has also been working with territorial governments on policy issues related to veterinary services in the north, and provided bursaries to northern students studying animal health-related disciplines.
VWB/VSF’s northern work was substantially aided by a generous grant from Pet Smart Charities of Canada.
