Unleashing Hope in the North: Meet Jocelyn Skeard, northern community liaison with Veterinarians Without Borders

In remote Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley), Northwest Territories, Jocelyn Skeard's passion for positive change knows no limits. As a longtime community member, community liaison, and key stakeholder in establishing the Veterinarians Without Borders North America (VWB) clinics, her impact is deeply rooted within the community, reaching into the realm of national animal healthcare platforms. She is a dynamic force in community mobilization activities and has contributed significantly to the success of VWB's clinics in Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley).

Her role as a community liaison has been a keystone of success for the VWB clinics, emphasizing her vital and foundational role in community-led animal health care initiatives. Jocelyn's collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to community well-being has helped to make her an invaluable asset for the VWB clinics. Working closely with VWB staff and volunteers, she has seamlessly integrated her deep understanding of Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley)'s needs into the clinics, ensuring they are finely tuned to the pulse of the local population.

Jocelyn & Michelle at the clinicJocelyn's impact extends beyond the community. She attended Humane Canada's Summit for Animals in 2023, where she spoke about the transformative impact of the clinics in Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley). Her emphasis on culturally adapted programs mobilized by community members highlighted a powerful truth — that local involvement and understanding are key to achieving lasting change. Her insights resonated not just with attendees but also underscored the significance of community-driven initiatives in animal healthcare.

A unique and personal touch to Jocelyn's clinic involvement was the inclusion of her furry companions. She brought her dogs to VWB's remote clinics for neutering, a decision that sparked a shift in the community's perception of male dog sterilization. This personal commitment not only showcased her dedication but also served as a powerful example, altering perceptions, and encouraging responsible pet care practices.

Her efforts were evident in the increasing number of local community members seeking animal healthcare services at the VWB clinics. Her advocacy and outreach endeavors effectively connected individuals in Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley) to the vital care provided by the clinics, resulting in an increased number of clients seeking support for their pets.

Acknowledgment for Jocelyn's pivotal role in the clinics' success echoed throughout the town. Pet guardians, community members, VWB staff, and volunteers have expressed gratitude for her tireless commitment, recognizing that her collaborative approach and genuine care have enhanced the clinics' effectiveness and cultivated a bond of trust and partnership between VWB's clinics and the local community.

Jocelyn's influence remains like a catalyst for positive transformation in the community of Pehdzeh Ki (Wrigley). Her contributions, including her advocacy for responsible pet care and impactful community initiatives, continued to forge a meaningful path toward a healthier, more connected future.
